The project provides a new 3rd floor addition and extensive renovation to a single-family residence in San Francisco. The program requires that new walls remain devoid of architectural detail to maximize available surface areas for the owner's vast art collection. Therefore, the design investigation shifts to the ceiling plane, where an emergent geometric pattern visually deforms into an alternating presence of valleys and bulges. Covering the entire top floor, this surface unifies the interior spaces with a continually changing pattern.

Rather than pre-establish heightened zones of deformation, our efforts focus on providing a random distribution of lines, and when viewed from different vantage points, would create new alignments. Each ceiling plank is individually cut via digital milling in collaboration with Studio Under Manufacture. The effect is a ceiling pattern that visually realigns at all times, making the viewer's presence in space the central thesis to the project. Outside, an entry gate is perforated with a security warning written in binary code text.
